Seth Garland is a contemporary British artist whose painting and sculpture explore themes which evade simple explanation. His recent volume of work has inhaled the uneasiness of current times, in which all could be read as political satire or equally interpreted as personal conflicts. These intentional and sometimes humorous contradictions seem to parallel our modern world.
Garland, born 1977 Truro, lives and works in Cornwall. His creativity stems from his upbringing, being the son of professional illustrators Linda and Roger Garland. His father best known for illustrating the Tolkien book jackets. This childhood connection with the visual arts ignited a restless appetite for creative processes. During his study at Central Saint Martins, Garland won second prize in 'The Art of Imagination Open Competition', held at the Mall Galleries, London and was their youngest prize winer at the age of 20. His early work was heavily influenced by historical painting methods culminating with solo shows in London at the Albemarle Gallery and in Los Angeles with the Wendt Gallery. Garland has work featured in many prominent private collections throughout the UK and the US.
His latest work has explored a multi disciplinary approach, where material choices particularly in his sculpture play an important role in the story telling. Demonstrating the same forensic detail and fastidious construction as his paintings, his witty and playful forms are imbued with an apparent familiarity yet closer scrutiny reveal complex narratives.
